SSA field offices have started closing earlier
4:04 pm | link
As of November 19, SSA field offices around the country started closing 30 minutes
earlier each day. If your local office used to close to the public at 3:30 p.m., now it will close at 3 p.m. Not
only that, but starting January 3, 2013, field offices will close to the public every Wednesday at noon.
is being justified as a cost-saving measure made necessary by decreased funding. The press release announcing the reduced
hours said that while agency employees would continue to work their regular hours, the "shorter public window"
would give them more time to finish face-to-face interviews and process claims work without incurring overtime costs.
The release pinned the need for the move on "significantly reduced funding provided by Congress."
This means two things for the public, at least in the short term. First, field offices are going to be a little more
crowded when they're open to the public. Second, when you need to go to a field office, it's a good idea to call ahead
and make an appointment. Those who don't, and who just show up, will be waiting a little longer to be seen.
